more Space marines WIP

Making good use of my time off, getting more space marines progressed so I can make room on the painting table for the new Stormclaw arrival....

A bit of detailing and clean up and these dudes will be ready for action

jump packs are magnetised for easier storage of the minis

picked up some old school marines a few weeks ago, thought I would do them as imperial fists

then thought I would make it up to a 10 man squad using current minis...

comparison of old and new, guess the new ones have had 20+ years of 'growing' on the originals...

Bolters, 'coloured' or metallic?

After discussion with my good friend 'painter john' he queried why all my marines have metallic bolters. To me its simple, they are made of metal. A lot of the bolters on the interweb and in codicies etc show them with coloured casings which I have never been a fan of, John suggested painting them black, with a grey highlight to pick out the edges.

Am still not decided, need to ponder on it a bit longer...

Descent 2 heroes

Painted up 5 of the heroes from Descent 2nd edition. The minis are good, lots of detail on them, but suffer from being made of soft plastic like so many boardgame minis, which can make removal of mould/flash lines difficult.

Table top spraying

Have been meaning to improve my game boards for a while, so finally got round to masking them up and sprayed. Went with a simple road layout and a simple town square.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away

After activating they hyperdrive in the upper atmosphere of Ryloth, Kel Orta & Sai Rye realise it is running hotter and faster than normal, and will probably fail before they get to Siskeen. They manage a controlled reversion to realspace and effect temporary repairs before getting underway again. Luckily the Ravager arrives on Siskeen ahead of schedule.

On approach for landing it can be seen that Siskeen is still recovering from the clone wars, with ruined cities and wrecks of capital ships visible scattered over the surface. The Ravager puts down in a spaceport, and a customs inspector and 6 clone troopers arrive. They conduct a cursory inspection before leaving, saying they will send a repair crew to assist them. As they leave Kel Orta thinks the inspector was a bit nervous...

A repair droid and R2 team arrive shortly and start assessing the cost to fix the Ravager. Tark’o and his family ask to leave, and say they will give the team whatever funds they can spare. The repairteam droid breaks the bad news to Kel Orta , it will cost 20,000Cr to repair the hyperdrive, or they can get a new one fitted for 30,000Cr, also repairs to the hull will cost 20,000Cr and take 2 weeks. In discussion the team realises it would be better to sell the Ravager and get a new ship. Tark’o returns and gives the team 5,000Cr, and also says he will have a warm welcome for them if they ever return to Siskeen.

After asking around the team settle on buying a used YT1300 for 20,000Cr, and being unable to find a buyer for the Ravager decide to move the Ravager to an adjoining dock and strip the computer, shields and sensor systems out of it to fit on the YT1300 later on, and sell the stripped Ravager for 5,000Cr.

After 3 days the team has nearly finished stripping parts out of the Ravager. Kel Orta and Cyrus are moving trolleys of parts from one bay to the other. Kel Orta hears the sound of troopers approaching, turns and puts his hands up in surrender and sees 2 squads of 6 clone troopers led by an inspector, telling him to drop weapons and surrender. Oblivious as always Cyrus is caught by surprise by 2 squads of troopers, he pauses as the anger flares inside him.

Darjan and Sai Rye are running diagnostics on the YT1300, Darjan gets a sensor ping from high orbit, the Hunter has arrived. He shouts a warning to Sai Rye, and as they look out of the ship see Kel Orta being held at blaster point. Sai rye heads down the entry ramp to see what is going on, whilst Darjan heads up to the top hatch in case he needs to flee.

Kel Orta tries to ask what the troopers want, but half of them order him against the wall as the other half point guns at Sai Rye. In the other dock, Cyrus unleashes his anger, shrugging off the stun bolts the troopers fire at him, cutting them down with his lightsabres.

From the top of the YT1300, Darjan sees Sai Rye and Kel Orta agains the wall, and hears the screams of troopers from the adjoining dock. The troopers stun Sai Rye and Kel Orta. Cyrus vents his anger and frustration on the clone troopers, cutting swathes through them in his dark rage, as more and more of them converge on his position. Darjan flees from the dock and head out towards the ruins of ships away from the dock. As Cyrus hacks down troopers he sees high above him more landing craft approaching, and decides to take the fight to the enemy. He storms a landing craft and sets off towards the Hunter in low orbit.

The comm system crackles on in the landing craft but Cyrus ignores it. Soon blaster bolts are bouncing off the hull of the lander but he holds it together through his sheer anger, the attacking fighters peel off as he gets closer to the Hunter. After a moments quietness the sky is filled with turbolaser blasts that soon find the mark. As the lander explodes Cyrus ejects in an escape pod.

As the escape pod slams into the ground, Cyrus’s rage fades, he climbs out V-wing fighters screech overhead, he heads towards ruins in the distance....

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away

The team are still on Ryloth, and head out to the town find Tark’o, the Twi’Lek that Jazzer wants them to kill painfully and publcly. On the way they come up with a plan to replace Tark’o with Kel Orta, who will use an alchemical potion given to the team by Barin to change his appearance to match the Twi’Lek.

Arriving at the town, they scout out the town square where the meeting will be held, getting a good idea of the layout and seeing it can hold over 1000 people. After making some discreet enquiries they track down Tark’o who is hiding in a town house, accessed via the sewer system. It takes some doing but they manage to persuade Tark’o and his family to leave town whilst they take his place, agreeing to pick them up when everything calms down and get them off planet.

Having the house to themselves, Kel Orta takes the potion and meditates, focussing on the shape of Tark’o. The process is agonising as the dark chemicals reshape his body but he holds his concentration and controls the change, after a few hours he has taken on the appearance of the Twi’Lek, and he feels he has taken another step into darkness. The team rests for the night and most of the next morning,

The team sets off to the town square before the meeting, Kel Orta keeping a hooded cloak tight to himself so no-one recognises him. A large crowd is packed into the square, the team spots local enforcement officers on the 4 main entry roads to the square, as well as a figures with rifles up on the rooftops surrounding the square.

At 2pm Kel Orta gets on to the platform to start rallying the crowd, and Darjan reaches out with the force to start choking him, as Sai Rye and Cyrus cover him in case anyone realises what is happening. Kel Orta is lifted off his feet and starts gasping for air, the crowd starts to panic and chaos spreads. Darjan maintains the choke as the crowd jostles him and the others. Kel Orta starts to pass out.
The snipers on the roof can see ‘Tark’O’ choking out and want to make the kill more painful and public so open up with blaster bolts, catching him with a couple. Darjan leaps onto the platform to grab Kel’Orta and stop him being shot, as he does blaster bolts strike him and Kel Orta but they manage to leap back into the crowd, trying to use them as cover. All the blaster shots cause the crowd to panic even more, people are crushed as well as trampled, the crowd takes blaster hits as the team uses the crowd for cover. As the team mix further into the crowd the sniper fire stops, and after a few minutes the team exits the square via a side building and leaves town in their speeder.

The team returns to Jazzer, he is not pleased, the job could hardly be called a success, without a definite kill the anti slave movement on Ryloth will continue. He tells the team to come back in a month if they want more work, then leaves the cantina clearly fed up with them.

Returning to the Ravager, Kel Orta meditates on the holocron which he had left there for safekeeping. He learns that the change will last until he masters the dark alchemy to change himself (or until he can find another vial of the chemicals). In the quiet of the ship Cyrus and Darjan realise they did nothing to help anyone in the crowd, and feel the touch of darkness upon themselves.

Once things quiet down, the team flies out into the desert and picks up Tark’o and his family, them makes for orbit so they can jump to Siskeen, which is on the way to their next mission on Hypori. As they head skywards the flight lanes are quite clear, and then on sensors they pick up a large Imperial vessel. The comm system crackles to life ‘This is the Imperial vessel Hunter, shut down engines and prepare to be brought aboard’, needless to say Kel Orta opens the throttle wide to try and outrun them, opening up a slight lead. Another message from the Hunter, this time warning they will open fire. Kel Orta holds course as the team powers up weapons and shields. As the Hunter is ahead of them blocking their escape to safe jump distance Kel Orta tries veer away but the Hunter keeps on an intercept course, opening up with its turbolasers. The hunter gets a lucky shot with its turbolasers (natural 20!), inflicting massive damage on the Ravager, as it warning lights flicker and alarms sound, they realise another hit like that and they are done for.

Sai Rye presses the jump button.......
